INTERVIEW with SARAH KREMER, program Director of Bay Area Mentoring www.bayareamentoring.org
and
Mentor and Mentee Kristin Hanley and Tony Rivera of FriendsforYouth.org
Bay Area Mentoring promotes youth mentoring by connecting programs and community members throughout Northern California.
Be Inspired by Bay Area Youth!
Bay Area Mentoring programs are in need of 2,000 caring and positive volunteers to connect with children in communities across the San Francisco Bay Area. Celebrate National Mentoring Month by attending our Fishbowl Forum. You'll hear young people from these programs share how mentoring has profoundly impacted their lives.
Bay Area Mentoring, along with First Exposures, will be hosting the Fishbowl Forum at SF Camerawork in San Francisco on Saturday January 31, 2009 from 3-6pm. John Yap of the Youth Development Initiative of San Mateo County will facilitate the forum as part of National Mentoring Month. This event is FREE and open to the public!
SF Camerawork is located at 657 Mission St, San Francisco.

INTERVIEW ADOPT A SPECIAL KID www.aask.org
Adopt A Special Kid is licensed as an adoption and foster care agency in 21 Northern California Counties. We provide all necessary social work services and training at no cost to families interested in fostering or adopting children in foster care. (Adopt A Special Kid Adoption License No. 015201920; Foster Care License No. 015201918)
For families who are interested in adopting children not in the child welfare system, AASK’s Hope-To-Home program can help you complete all the legal requirements to finalize your adoption. Whether you are planning to adopt an infant from a birth mother, or to adopt from a private agency outside of California, AASK is able to provide homestudies and other services at a reasonable cost. Please contact us to learn more about our rates.
AASK also strives to offer comprehensive post-adoptive support. Their social work staff can help you to document your child’s needs and advocate for services. They host AASK family events and offer free tickets to sports games, concerts and other family entertainment. Each June, AASK teams up with Stanislaus County to host Camp ALWAYS (A Life With Adoption Yields Success), a five-day retreat for adoptive families featuring speakers, trainings and outdoor activities for parents and children. Every August, AASK grants awards from the Dorothy and Robert DeBolt Scholarship Fund to high-achieving former foster youth who were adopted in California.
Most importantly, AASK connect their families with one another, to share stories, strategies, challenges and triumphs, and to help build community and tradition for all adoptive families.

INTERVIEW with MARK HAWTHORNE author of the book STRIKING AT THE ROOTS: A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO ANIMAL ACTIVISM
Striking at the Roots: A Practical Guide to Animal Activism brings together the most effective tactics for speaking out for animals and gives voice to activists from around the globe, who explain why their models of activism have been successful – and how you can get involved. Concise and full of practical examples and resources, this guide dispels the myths surrounding animal activism and will empower you to make the most of your skills. From simple leafleting to taking direct action, each chapter clearly explains where to begin, what to expect and how to ensure your message is heard.
“Brilliant, easy to read, full of real-life experiences and practical examples. If you want to make your life count, influence others and save a few thousand lives, this book is your roadmap. Give it to everyone you know!”
Ingrid Newkirk, president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
Mark Hawthorne gave up eating meat after an encounter with one of India’s many cows in 1992, then went vegan a decade later upon visiting Animal Place, an education center and sanctuary for farmed animals near his home in northern California. Beginning in 2004, Mark served as a contributing writer for Satya until the magazine ceased publication in 2007, and he is a frequent contributor to VegNews. His writing has also appeared in Vegan Voice, Herbivore, Hinduism Today, Utne.com and newspapers across the U.S. Mark shares his vegetable crisper with five rabbits rescued by SaveABunny, which works with San Francisco Bay Area animal shelters to find loving homes for rabbits. Much of Mark's writing can be viewed on firstprecept.com. He is currently working on his second book.
