INTERVIEW with ANA-MARIE of CARD - COLLABORATING
AGENCIES RESPONDING to DISASTER
CARD was created after the Loma Prieta earthquake and
the Oakland Hills firestorm to provide disaster
preparedness/response support to Alameda County
Community Based Organizations (CBOs). CARD helps
service providers get prepared, stay prepared and be
better able to keep staff and clients calm, safe and
ready to respond appropriately in an emergency.
Members of our community who are seniors, children,
disabled, homeless, non-English speakers, low-income
or otherwise in need of ongoing support, become the
"First Victims" because they often have little or no
ability to address their own preparedness, response
and recovery needs. Further, the loss of their trained
and trusted local service providers during and after a
disaster, leaves them without critical support.
Organizations providing disaster services to the
general public are often unable to address or
accommodate special needs communities, nor are they
designed to provide long-term or ongoing support
services. Trained, coordinated and united local
agencies are the best and often the only support
available for people with special needs in times of
disaster. CARD trained agencies are now recognized and
valued by emergency managers, funders, and government
officials for the critical role they play in all
aspects of community response.
CARD SERVICES
CARD helps you develop, update and maintain an AGENCY
EMERGENCY PLAN tailored to your individual agency and
designed to work in harmony with other community
agencies and the overall emergency response structure.
SELF and HOME PREPAREDNESS training to help employees
feel secure in their ability to deal effectively with
emergencies and serve their community empowered and
unafraid.
CARD offers the most user-friendly, easily-understood
training available on ICS (INCIDENT cOMMAND SYSTEM)
for community responders — the communications and
organization system used by all state response
agencies in California.
CARD supports your agency in practicing preparedness
and response skills with tabletop and other DISASTER
EXERCISES .
Training on SPECIAL TOPICS such as
sheltering-in-place, creating Memoranda of
Understanding, disaster fundraising, and crisis
communications.
Through CARD meetings and trainings, your agency can
network and establish RECIPROCAL SUPPORT RELATIONSHIPS
with other agencies and local governments.

INTERVIEW with MELIA FRANKLIN of BAY AREA PARENT LEADERSHIP ACTION NETWORK.
Bay Area Parent Leadership Action Network was created in 2004 by a collaboration of organizations, including Partnership for Immigrant Leadership and Action (PILA), Coleman Advocates for Children and Youth, Parent Voices, Parent Services Project, and Action Alliance for Children, to address a lack of regional coordination and capacity-building for a growing movement of low-income and immigrant parents. Many organizations around the Bay Area were doing great work organizing and building the leadership of parents, but organizations didn’t often talk to each other or collaborate across issues or county lines. The groups initially came together in a year-long process to plan a regional conference held in 2003, entitled Parents Leading the Way toward Stronger Communities for Families. The conference was envisioned as a catalyst for movement-building, and it sparked a conversation about what was needed to strengthen and build parents’ efforts to organize and lead on issues that were vital to their children and families. Core members of the planning group continued to meet after the conference ended, and PLAN was born, guided by a vision to build a visible, powerful movement of low-income families that can have a voice in the decisions that affect families--from our schools, to our communities, and to the state Capitol. PLAN now has a network of more than 800 families, grassroots parent organizations, and allied groups throughout the Bay Area.

INTERVIEW with REBECCA DURAN of a bay area mentor program FRIENDS FOR YOUTH
WWW.FRIENDSFOR YOUTH.ORG
Friends for Youth
has been dedicated to making a difference in the lives of at-risk youth since 1979.
By establishing and supporting one-to-1 mentoring relationships between youth-in-need and responsible, caring adults, we know we change lives for the betterment of individuals and the community.
Founded in 1979, Friends for Youth's Mentoring Services program has had success far beyond the national average in helping young people stay out of trouble. Over 1,650 youth have been in our program with over 88% maintaining their commitment to their mentoring relationship. Studies have consistently shown that youth in our program stay in school, improve their school performance, are more motivated, and rarely have future involvement with the Juvenile Justice System.
Anyone can be a mentor. It doesn't take any special skills or education. All it takes is a willingness to listen and be a friend. Mentoring is about having fun and just being there for a young person who needs an adult to depend on.
There is a high NEED for more male mentors. Please donate your time to a child's life.
