INTERVIEW with MELIA FRANKLIN of BAY AREA PARENT LEADERSHIP ACTION NETWORK.

Bay Area Parent Leadership Action Network was created in 2004 by a collaboration of organizations, including Partnership for Immigrant Leadership and Action (PILA), Coleman Advocates for Children and Youth, Parent Voices, Parent Services Project, and Action Alliance for Children, to address a lack of regional coordination and capacity-building for a growing movement of low-income and immigrant parents. Many organizations around the Bay Area were doing great work organizing and building the leadership of parents, but organizations didn’t often talk to each other or collaborate across issues or county lines. The groups initially came together in a year-long process to plan a regional conference held in 2003, entitled Parents Leading the Way toward Stronger Communities for Families. The conference was envisioned as a catalyst for movement-building, and it sparked a conversation about what was needed to strengthen and build parents’ efforts to organize and lead on issues that were vital to their children and families. Core members of the planning group continued to meet after the conference ended, and PLAN was born, guided by a vision to build a visible, powerful movement of low-income families that can have a voice in the decisions that affect families--from our schools, to our communities, and to the state Capitol. PLAN now has a network of more than 800 families, grassroots parent organizations, and allied groups throughout the Bay Area.
